AI Search is Reshaping Brand Reputation, and Reddit is Becoming the New Battleground

The way consumers research brands is changing rapidly. Instead of beginning with a traditional search engine, many buyers now turn to generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, asking straightforward questions like, “Which brand is better?” or “What do real customers think?” Increasingly, the responses they receive are not drawn from corporate websites or press releases but from discussions taking place on community platforms such as Reddit.

According to Rajdeep Singh Chauhan, Reputation Risk Strategist, founder of BigBuzz Media Services (Dubai) and Pulse Business (Gurugram), this shift is redefining online reputation management. He believes organizations that continue to rely solely on search engine optimization (SEO) and media relations risk overlooking platforms that are increasingly shaping AI-generated answers.

Reddit Emerges as a Key Source for AI Search Responses

Recent industry research indicates that Reddit has become one of the most frequently referenced sources for large language models when generating responses about brands and products.

A Semrush analysis of more than 150,000 AI citations across 5,000 keywords, published in June 2025, found that Reddit accounted for approximately 40.1% of citations generated by leading AI models, ahead of Wikipedia and YouTube.

Separate research conducted by Profound, which analyzed approximately 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity between August 2024 and June 2025, similarly found Reddit to be one of the dominant information sources used by AI search systems.

These findings suggest that AI-generated recommendations are increasingly influenced by user-generated discussions rather than official brand communications.

Why Traditional Reputation Strategies Are No Longer Enough

For years, organizations have relied on public relations and search engine optimization to shape public perception.

While media coverage continues to build credibility and SEO helps improve visibility in conventional search results, Chauhan argues that neither approach directly influences how AI assistants summaries a brand when responding to user queries.

Instead, AI systems frequently synthesize information from discussions occurring across online communities, particularly where users compare products, share personal experiences, or debate brand performance.

As a result, conversations taking place outside a company’s owned channels are increasingly contributing to how potential customers perceive a brand.

Why Reddit Holds Particular Influence

Several factors explain Reddit’s growing importance within AI search ecosystems.

Its discussion-based structure closely mirrors the conversational format used by modern AI models, making it easier for retrieval systems to extract context and generate natural-language responses.

In addition, licensing agreements that provide AI companies with access to Reddit’s content have increased the platform’s relevance within AI-generated search results.

Unlike static webpages that may remain unchanged for long periods, Reddit discussions continue evolving as users contribute new comments and perspectives, helping maintain their visibility within retrieval systems.

Older Discussions Can Continue Influencing Brand Perception

One of the emerging challenges for organizations is the longevity of online discussions.

Research cited by Chauhan suggests that many Reddit posts referenced by AI systems are approximately one year old, while a smaller proportion date back several years.

Consequently, historical conversations—whether positive or negative—may continue influencing AI-generated responses long after the underlying circumstances have changed.

The research also indicates that AI models generally cite both positive and negative discussions without evaluating whether the information remains current or representative of present-day customer experiences.

Monitoring Conversations Before They Shape AI Responses

According to Chauhan, reputation management is becoming increasingly proactive rather than reactive.

Instead of monitoring media coverage after publication, organizations need to identify online discussions while they are still evolving and before they become influential sources for AI-generated answers.

This requires monitoring category-specific conversations across forums and community platforms, understanding emerging narratives, and participating transparently where appropriate.

Chauhan says this evolving requirement led to the development of DRRIe™, a reputation intelligence framework designed to identify reputation risks at the discussion stage rather than after they become embedded within AI-generated search responses.

Press Relations and SEO Continue to Play an Important Role

Despite the changing digital landscape, Chauhan emphasizes that public relations and SEO remain essential components of brand communication.

Media coverage continues to build credibility among journalists, analysts, investors, and business stakeholders, while SEO remains important for conventional web search.

However, as AI-assisted search continues to gain adoption, organizations may need to complement these established disciplines with broader strategies that address the sources increasingly referenced by AI platforms.

Industry forecasts suggest AI-assisted search usage will continue growing over the coming years, making online community discussions an increasingly important component of brand visibility.

AI Citation Patterns Continue to Evolve

The AI search ecosystem remains dynamic, with citation behavior capable of changing rapidly.

Chauhan points to recent industry developments demonstrating how shifts in platform relationships and content availability can significantly alter which sources AI systems reference.

This volatility, he argues, reinforces the need for organizations to treat AI visibility as an ongoing strategic discipline rather than a one-time optimization exercise.

Building Trust Through Authentic Participation

As AI increasingly influences purchasing decisions, Chauhan believes organizations should focus on participating authentically in online discussions rather than attempting to control them.

Community platforms are highly sensitive to inauthentic engagement, making transparency and genuine interaction essential for building long-term credibility.

“The conversations shaping a brand’s reputation are already taking place in public,” Chauhan says. “The question is no longer whether those conversations exist, but whether organisations are actively participating in them before they become part of AI-generated answers.”
